The Kenya Adventure 2017

The Get Leading group ventured out to Kenya in February to work alongside inspiring grass roots leaders changing the lives of some of the most disadvantaged children and families in their communities.

Upon arrival we teamed up with people from Standard Chartered Bank who helped fundraise for the trip and travelled from all over the world to experience Kenya with us and make a difference together.

We began the journey by going to Rain Edge School and Sure 24 Children’s home in Nakuru. Husband and wife duo Sammy and Millie Nawali started the project by rescuing a few children who were living on the streets in Nakuru in 2007. Now they house and look after 174 children and young people, as well as run a school for over 300 children in the area.

With direction from the Kenyan builders and co workers we got practical and helped them build a wall around the children’s home to make it safe and secure.

It was wonderful to spend time with the children there. We ran sports, arts, crafts and dance workshops with them, and they taught us their traditional dance moves.

We then visited Tumaini (meaning Hope in Swahili) a community project providing training and after school activities for young people in the heart of a slum called Soweto in Nairobi. Founded by Anton Njoroge and friends in response to the hopelessness he saw growing up in the area, the project now has a feeding program funded by our social enterprise The Feel Good Bakery, that provides meals for over 60 elderly people every other week and over 400 children every week. When we asked Anton what kept him going he said this:

“Hope is the legacy I want to leave behind, investing hope in the next generation is what keeps me going.”

The team worked alongside the Tumaini volunteers by preparing and serving food. They also built a shelter for elderly people that needed a new home in the slum.

It was a fantastic time, rich with inspiring and beautiful moments. This week we will reveal a number of stories from the group that shine a light on the people and places we visited, and impact they had on them – watch this space! …
