Get Leading trip to Calais – Hayfa’s story

Last weekend some of the Get Leading group went to calais to join forces with a bunch of truly inspirational people at Help Refugee. Hayfa’s share’s her thoughts about our time away:

‘This past weekend I spent my time with my favourite group of people offering our time in Calais. I’ve wanted to go over there for a very long time and I was completely stunned at the conditions out there and the sheer dedication of the people and volunteers out there who have dedicated their time in helping the people there despite the increasingly hostile environment.

We spent our time at the warehouse that acts as the hub of 8 charities that collectively supply aid, food, and help in so many other ways to the migrants there. We sorted donations, and was able to play a part in “helping the people who help the people”. Almost 2 years after the “refugee crisis” frenzy in the media, and almost a year since the destruction of the “Calais jungle” and it’s so easy to forget that there are still hundreds of people in Calais and the surrounding areas and other places such as Greece and Italy, whose journeys just keep getting increasingly difficult because of political agendas and police brutality.

It’s so easy to feel hopeless, angry, sad and just a whirlwind of emotions trying to find solutions to a problem where it seems like there isn’t an answer. But choosing love and remembering to care, always wins. I urge everyone to not forget the people like you and I and if anyone wants to know anymore about volunteering your time in Calais, or maybe you want to donate to the warehouse check out Help Refugee. “Charity does not decrease wealth” (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Sahih Muslim 2588)”

Get Leading is all about coming together to make a difference for good in the world. Joining in with a cause that is bigger than ourselves provokes us think about how we value human life through our actions. We won’t forget those brave travellers that are fleeing war and persecution for a better life. We will keep on working on, doing the stuff that brings hope, peace and joy to people.
